Mum still goes to work every day. When she gets home, she spends all her time questioning Dad’s nurses, checking up on the house girls, making sure Dad has eaten, that his nappy is clean, checking his medicine bottles, talking on the phone with the doctor. She’s like a tornado the way she runs around and fusses. It’s like she’s trying to save him, like she doesn’t believe he is leaving us. But even I can tell he’s going soon. It’s then that I realize how much Mum loves her husband.

When I’m not sitting with Dad, I explore the garden. It isn’t as big as our old one, but it’s still full of beauty. There’s a flamboyant tree in the center of the lawn; it has bright red flowers and thick branches perfect for climbing. Over in the corner there’s a pond, its surface covered with mosquito larvae. The driveway is bordered with palm trees and other plants. There’s a rubber tree that leaks a thick white sap when you cut into it. The grass is spiky and hard with yellow patches where the sun has burned it to a crisp. It’s nothing like the soft green English grass. This African grass is harder—it must endure a lot of punishment—and yet it survives.
